Olivier Giroud confident to execute against Virgil Van Dijk

France forward Oliver Giroud is confident Chelsea can unlock the Liverpool defence on Sunday

Giroud will try to get one over on Virgil Van Dijk once again when the Blues travel up to Merseyside for matchday 34.

Van Dijk will do his best to marshal the defence at Anfield to keep Giroud and company off the scoreboard.

With Liverpool running down the Premier League title, Chelsea are fighting for qualification to next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea’s 32-year-old striker has had the upper hand in recent encounters Van Dijk.

The two teams drew on 29 September but Giroud scored in France’s 2-1 win over the Netherlands in the international break that month.

Even though the Reds’ centre back may well end up as the PFA Player of the Year, Giroud is confident he can beat him at least once in the key match.

“I played against him personally a few times and it has always been a tough position because he is very good and very strong, but I’ve scored a few goals playing against his teams.”

“[Like in] the Netherlands when we played recently but I won last year and scored at Stamford Bridge and scored the winner at the Stade de France against the Netherlands a few months ago.”



The former Arsenal striker is hoping his team-mates will latch onto his mentality.

“We don’t have to be scared and no matter who plays we will be 100% focused on winning the game.”

Chelsea have the momentum of four straight victories across all competitions to boost their confidence before facing Liverpool’s formidable attacking corps.
